Castelão: A Vibrant Expression of the Algarve
Castelão (also known as Periquita and João de Santarém) is one of Portugal’s most widely planted red grape varieties, with a history stretching back centuries. It thrives in the southern regions, including Tejo, Lisbon, Alentejo, Algarve and particularly shines in the Península de Setúbal, where it has long been the backbone of local red wines.
It is a crossing of two grapes: a white one, Cayetana Blanca (Spain), and Alfrocheiro Preto (Portugal).
Castelão is versatile; it can produce light, fruit-forward wines (characterised by juicy red berry aromas, such as strawberry, raspberry, and red cherry) for everyday enjoyment, as well as more structured and rustic reds with the potential to age. Its natural profile is often described as lively and slightly earthy, with moderate tannins and balanced acidity. When made without oak, it showcases its pure, unmasked fruit character. With age, leather, tobacco, dried fruits and earthy complexity come forward.
Castelão is valued for its adaptability. It thrives in warm, dry conditions and can withstand drought well, making it an ideal choice for the Algarve’s sun-soaked climate and sandy soils.
In our Sorvo Red, we adopt a minimalist approach: spontaneous fermentation, extended skin-contact for gentle structure, and no oak ageing, allowing the grape’s natural charm to shine through. Its moderate tannins and lighter body make it an easy-drinking red, while still retaining enough structure to pair well with food such as sardines, grilled chicken, mushroom risotto, and dishes with tomatoes, onions, and peppers.
For me, Castelão represents the joyful side of Algarve wines: fresh and fruit-driven. It’s the bottle you open for a relaxed meal with friends, or even serve slightly chilled on a warm evening. By choosing Castelão, I remain faithful to the region’s roots while crafting a red wine that’s approachable, vibrant, and unmistakably our own.
